What does stick drift actually look like?
Stick drift isn't always obvious at first. It tends to creep up gradually — you might notice something feels slightly off before it becomes a real problem. Here's what to watch for:
- Your in-game character or camera moves slowly in one direction without you touching either stick
- Menu cursors drift or scroll on their own, making it difficult to navigate
- Your aim slowly creeps left, right, up or down — particularly noticeable in shooters where precision matters
- The problem is inconsistent early on — sometimes the controller behaves fine, other times it's terrible
- Over weeks or months, the drift becomes more pronounced and more frequent until it's constant
That inconsistency in the early stages is actually a useful diagnostic clue. If the drift comes and goes, it's more likely to be debris or a borderline potentiometer. Constant, predictable drift usually means the wear is more advanced.
What causes stick drift in the PS5 DualSense?
To understand why drift happens, you need to know how the stick actually works.
Each analog stick in the DualSense sits on top of a small component called a potentiometer — essentially a variable resistor. As you move the stick, a tiny contact wiper slides along a carbon-coated track inside the potentiometer. The console reads the electrical resistance at that wiper's position and translates it into a precise X/Y coordinate for the stick.
When everything is new and working correctly, a centred stick returns a resistance reading of exactly zero movement. The problem is that carbon track. With heavy use, the contact wiper gradually wears away the carbon coating. Once it's worn, the potentiometer can no longer return a consistent reading at the centre position — so the console sees a small, constant resistance offset and interprets it as deliberate stick movement. That's drift.
There's a second cause that's easier to fix: physical debris. Dust, crumbs or other particles that work their way under the stick cap can physically push the stick slightly off-centre. In that case, the potentiometer itself is fine — it's just being held in a non-neutral position.
The DualSense's potentiometers are rated for approximately 2 million input cycles — heavy gamers who play several hours a day can exceed this in under a year.
It's also worth noting that the DualSense has a measurably higher rate of early stick drift compared to the PS4's DualShock 4. Sony faced class action lawsuits in the US, Canada and other countries specifically over DualSense drift, with plaintiffs arguing the controllers develop the problem well within a normal usage period. Sony settled some of those cases without admitting fault.
Things to try yourself first (free fixes)
Before spending any money, it's worth running through these steps. They take 10–15 minutes and fix a meaningful proportion of drift cases — particularly if the drift is new or intermittent.
a) Clean under the stick cap
Debris under the cap is the easiest cause to rule out and the simplest to fix.
Remove the stick cap
Grip the stick cap firmly and pull straight up. It should pop off without much force — don't twist or lever it.
Blow out debris
Use a can of compressed air to blow around the base of the exposed stick mechanism, working from multiple angles. You may see dust or crumbs dislodge.
Apply isopropyl alcohol
Apply a small amount of 90%+ isopropyl alcohol around the base of the stick with a cotton swab or dropper — not so much that it pools. Slowly rotate the stick through its full range of motion 15–20 times to work the alcohol under the mechanism.
Let it dry completely
Wait at least 20–30 minutes before testing. IPA evaporates quickly but you want it fully dry before applying power.
b) Recalibrate in PS5 settings
Go to Settings → Accessories → Controllers → Calibrate DualSense Wireless Controller and follow the on-screen instructions. This prompts the console to re-establish the stick's neutral position. It won't fix hardware wear, but it can compensate for minor software drift or calibration drift that's crept in over time.
c) Update controller firmware
Go to Settings → Accessories → Controllers → DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software. If an update is available, install it. Firmware updates occasionally address false drift readings caused by software rather than hardware — it's a quick thing to rule out.
Cleaning and recalibration work well for dust-related drift and minor software issues. If the potentiometer track is genuinely worn, no amount of cleaning will restore it permanently — the drift will return within days or weeks. At that point, the component needs replacing.
Professional repair — potentiometer replacement
When the DIY steps don't hold, the fix is straightforward for an experienced technician: open the controller and swap out the worn potentiometer modules for new OEM-spec replacements.
Here's what the repair actually involves:
- The controller housing is opened by removing the screws from the back panel and carefully separating the two halves
- The stick module containing the worn potentiometer is desoldered from the PCB and lifted out
- A new stick module is soldered in — we use parts that match the original specifications so the stick action and resistance feel correct
- In most cases we replace both stick modules at the same time. If one has worn out, the other is typically close behind, and doing both in one visit saves you coming back a few months later
- After reassembly, the controller goes through a full function test — all buttons, triggers, touchpad, motion sensors and rumble motors

How TMR sticks are different
A TMR stick module works on a completely different principle to a potentiometer. Instead of a wiper scraping along a carbon track, it uses a tiny magnet attached to the stick shaft and a sensor that detects the magnetic field's position. There's no physical contact between moving parts — so the mechanism that causes potentiometer drift simply doesn't exist.
You may also see "Hall effect" sticks mentioned. Both use magnetic sensing and are drift-resistant. TMR sensors are a newer, more refined version — they're more sensitive and can deliver more precise positional readings at low stick deflections, which matters in competitive gaming.

- Shooters and precision games — the improved linearity and sensitivity of TMR sensors is genuinely noticeable in games where exact stick positioning matters (Call of Duty, Warzone, Apex, Gran Turismo).
- Anyone who wants to future-proof their controller — a good DualSense is worth investing in properly. With TMR modules installed, drift is effectively eliminated as a future problem.

If the controller has additional damage — a cracked shell, broken adaptive trigger mechanism, or charging port fault — it's worth getting a repair quote that covers everything before deciding whether replacement makes more financial sense.
