Signs You Need This Repair

Is Your PS5 Running Too Hot?

These are the most common signs that your PS5 has a thermal problem that needs attention.

"PS5 Is Too Hot" Warning

Your console displays a temperature warning and asks you to place it in a well-ventilated area — even when it already is.

Fan Running Constantly at Full Speed

The fan sounds like a jet engine even during simple tasks like the home screen or light games.

Unexpected Shutdowns

The PS5 powers off mid-game without warning. This is a built-in protection to prevent heat damage to the processor.

Console Gets Hot to the Touch

The top or rear of the console feels extremely hot — much warmer than it used to, especially in the exhaust area.

Performance Drops or Stuttering

Games that ran smoothly now stutter or drop frame rate. The PS5 throttles its own processor to protect itself from heat.

Longer Load Times Than Before

A PS5 that's throttling due to heat will also slow down storage read speeds — something you might notice in loading times.

Understanding the Causes

Why PS5s Overheat — Two Main Culprits

Most PS5 overheating issues come down to one or both of these causes.

Degraded Liquid Metal

Sony made an unusual engineering choice with the PS5 — instead of standard thermal paste, they used liquid metal (an Indium-Gallium alloy) as the thermal interface between the processor and heatsink. It's a superior conductor of heat, but it comes with trade-offs.

Over time, liquid metal can dry out, losing much of its thermal conductivity. It can also migrate out of position, leaving parts of the processor chip without proper coverage. In some cases it seeps onto the motherboard — where its electrical conductivity can cause short circuits and component damage.

Reapplying fresh liquid metal — correctly, with the right containment — is one of the most effective ways to restore normal PS5 temperatures.

Dust Buildup

Dust is the most common cause of PS5 overheating in older consoles. Over months and years, dust accumulates inside the machine — coating the heatsink fins, clogging the fan blades, and forming a thick layer that acts as thermal insulation rather than allowing heat to dissipate.

The PS5's large surface area heatsink is particularly prone to this. Even consoles that look clean on the outside can have a significant dust build-up inside the heatsink assembly that completely chokes airflow.

A thorough internal clean — including compressed air through the heatsink fins and careful fan cleaning — makes an immediate and measurable difference to temperatures.

What We Do

Our PS5 Thermal Service

A complete overhaul of your PS5's cooling system — not just a quick dust and reassemble.

1

Free Diagnostic

We check temperatures, fan behaviour and any error codes first. This confirms the issue and rules out other faults like a dying fan motor. No charge if you decide not to proceed.

2

Full Disassembly

We strip the PS5 down to the motherboard — removing the outer shell, fan assembly and heatsink. We take our time and document everything so nothing gets missed on reassembly.

3

Deep Internal Clean

Every surface is cleaned with compressed air and appropriate tools. Heatsink fins, fan blades, vents and the motherboard area are all thoroughly cleared of dust, debris and any oxidisation.

4

Liquid Metal Reapplication

The old liquid metal is carefully removed, the processor IHS (integrated heat spreader) is cleaned and inspected, and fresh liquid metal is applied in the correct quantity with proper containment barrier applied around the die to prevent migration. We also check for any existing liquid metal spread on the board and clean it up if found.

5

Thermal Pad Replacement

The PS5 uses thermal pads on multiple chips and components across the motherboard and heatsink. We replace these with quality pads of the correct thickness and conductivity — degraded pads are often overlooked but contribute significantly to heat problems.

6

Temperature Testing

Before handing your PS5 back we stress-test it under load and monitor temperatures. We're looking for sustained temperatures well within Sony's safe operating range — not just "it boots and seems okay".

Common Questions

PS5 Overheating FAQs

The two most common causes are dust accumulation inside the heatsink and fan, and degraded or migrated liquid metal. Sony used liquid metal as the thermal interface between the PS5's processor and heatsink — over time it can dry out or shift position, dramatically reducing heat transfer away from the chip.
Sony used an Indium-Gallium liquid metal alloy instead of traditional thermal paste in the PS5 because it transfers heat far more efficiently. However, it can migrate out of position over time, dry out, or in some cases seep onto nearby motherboard components — where its electrical conductivity can cause short circuits. Reapplying fresh liquid metal correctly, with proper containment, restores cooling performance and protects the board.
A full PS5 thermal service — deep clean, liquid metal reapplication and thermal pad replacement — starts from £45 at Tech Revive. We'll confirm the exact price after a free diagnostic. You only pay if we fix it.
You can remove the side panels and vacuum the intake vents for basic maintenance — Sony recommends this. But if the dust has reached the internal heatsink fins, or the liquid metal has degraded, surface cleaning won't resolve the overheating. The internal work requires full disassembly and specialist handling, particularly for the liquid metal reapplication.
Done incorrectly, yes — liquid metal is electrically conductive, so any stray drops on the motherboard can cause faults. That's why we apply a containment barrier around the processor die before applying, use the correct quantity, and inspect carefully before sealing the heatsink back down. We've done this many times without issue.
A proper liquid metal reapplication and thermal service should keep your PS5 running cool for several years. Dust will accumulate again over time — we'd recommend a light vent clean every 6–12 months and a full internal service every 2–3 years depending on your environment.
