What Is This Repair?

Understanding the PS5 HDMI Retimer Chip

The part most shops don't even know about

Inside every PS5 is a small integrated circuit called the HDMI retimer chip (sometimes labelled the HDMI IC or signal retimer). Its job is to receive the video signal generated by the PS5's processor and retransmit it cleanly through the HDMI port to your TV. When this chip degrades or fails — which happens more often than you'd think — the console turns on and runs normally, but sends no picture. The HDMI port itself looks perfectly fine. Your TV just shows a black screen or "No Signal."

Most repair shops only know how to replace the HDMI port. If the port is undamaged, they'll replace it anyway (unhelpfully), charge you, and the problem persists. Retimer chip repair requires specialist microsoldering tools and the skill to work at a component level on the PS5 motherboard — which is what we do.

Port replacement vs. retimer repair — what's the difference?

Our Repair Process

How We Repair the PS5 Retimer Chip

Specialist equipment, experienced hands, transparent process.

1

Free Diagnostic

We inspect the HDMI port for physical damage, then test the signal path and evaluate the retimer chip. This tells us exactly what's failed — and what needs fixing. No charge, even if you don't go ahead.

2

Fixed Quote

We give you a clear, firm price. If both the port and chip need attention, we'll combine them into one quote. You decide whether to proceed.

3

Careful Disassembly

The PS5 is opened with the correct tools, taking care to protect the motherboard and other components throughout.

4

Retimer Chip Rework

Using professional hot air rework equipment and under magnification, the failed retimer chip is carefully removed and replaced with a new component. This is precision work — not something to rush.

5

Full Test Before Reassembly

We test the video signal, audio output and all PS5 functions before putting the console back together. You don't get it back until we're certain it works.

Common Questions

PS5 Retimer Chip Repair FAQs

Yes — this is a scenario we see regularly. If an HDMI port replacement didn't fix the no-signal issue, the retimer chip was likely the actual fault all along. We can diagnose and repair the chip. Bring it in for a free diagnostic.
The exact cause isn't always clear — heat stress, power fluctuations and component wear over time are the most likely factors. It's more common in older PS5 units. There's no reliable way to prevent it.
Yes — we replace the chip with a new component, not a temporary workaround. Your 12-month warranty covers the repair, and in practice we rarely see the same fault recur in a chip we've replaced.
Sony typically charges a flat rate (often £150+) for out-of-warranty PS5 repairs, which can take several weeks. We offer a faster, local service at lower cost — and your console stays where you can see it, not posted off to a central facility.
We're based in Cheshunt and regularly see customers drive in from Enfield (15 min), Potters Bar (15–20 min), Hertford (20 min), Harlow (25 min) and across Hertfordshire and north London. We're the nearest specialist for this repair in the region.
